Poeta y reformista norteamericano. Nació en una granja en el seno de una familia cuáquera. Recibió una educación limitada, pero estuvo desde muy temprano interesado en la poesía. Se dedicó al periodismo y publicó su primer volumen de poemas en 1831. Entre 1833 y 1842 apoyó el abolicionismo de William Lloyd Garrison y se transformó en un prominente agitador antiesclavista. A partir de entonces, Whittier apoyó activamente diversas causas humanitarias al tiempo que publicaba nuevos volúmenes de poesía. Después de la guerra civil, se hizo famoso por sus animados retratos de la vida rural en Nueva Inglaterra. Su obra más conocida es el nostálgico poema pastoril Prisioneros de la nieve (1866). Otras de sus creaciones destacadas son Maud Muller (1854) y Barbara Frietchie (1863).
